Week-long search ops ends, 54 rescued from collapsed building

Dharwad: The operation launched by the rescue teams including the NDRF, SDRF and fire and emergency services to rescue people trapped in the debris of the under- construction commercial complex in Kumareshwar Nagar of Dharwad which collapsed on Tuesday last concluded on Monday morning. But after four hours, they could not trace any survivors. There were many doctors from Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and private clinics who offered their services at the crash site.“Because of the dedicated service the medical fraternity rendered, so many persons stuck in the debris could be saved. Hence, six earth movers were pressed into service to clear the debris.On Monday morning three bodies were found in a decomposed state in basement 2 of the building and they were shifted to civil hospital for postmortem, said a rescue officer.Fire and Emergency Services DIG B R Ravikante Gowda said that it was the first time that a rescue operation was conducted for seven days and 71 survivors were brought out alive with minimum injury. The very fact that there was no casualty in any hospital after the injured were admitted is a pointer to the dedication the staff has shown,” said a relative of a rescued person.The police department was also hailed because thousands of police personnel from Dharwad, Hubballi and other places were fully involved in facilitating easy and fast movement of ambulances, fire fighters and other vehicles ferrying emergency services, controlling the crowd that had gathered to see the rescue operation and consoling the relatives of those who were stuck in the debris.Police commissioner M N Nagaraj, DCPs Nagesh and Gunari, men and women constables, trainee constables and additional forces from KSRP and district police were present almost round the clock during the operation..
