Manipur launches free remedial coaching for students from marginalized sections

IMPHAL: The Manipur government on Monday launched a free remedial coaching programme for students from minority and other backward classes (MOBC), Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students.The six-month programme, Chief Minister's Lairik Yengminnasi (Let's read books) Programme 2017-18, is being implemented by the Manipur Minorities and OBC Economic Development Society under the Department for Welfare of Minorities, OBCs and Scheduled Castes. "This is one of many social security schemes we have taken up for the poor and needy," chief minister Biren Singh said while launching the programme at his office secretariat on Monday.The government has earmarked Rs 74 lakh for the programme, under which 83 government school teachers and 71 private sector teachers will be roped in.Three subjects - science, maths and English - will be covered and classes will take place from 6am to 8.30am.Existing infrastructure of government schools will be used to run the programme under two categories - one covering Class VI to X and the other covering Class XI and XII science.The government has already identified schools across the state for both categories..
