Student bodies protest in Imphal

IMPHAL: A large number of youth Congress and NSUI members on Saturday marched to the Raj Bhavan here in protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.Headed by leaders of Youth Congress and NSUI, the rally was taken out from the Congress Bhawan in Imphal . The All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (Amuco), along with other civil bodies, took out a rally from its Kwakeithel office in Imphal West and proceeded towards Keishampat. Five representatives of the two organizations later met the governor and submitted a memorandum.Various student bodies and civil society organisations on Saturday staged anti-citizenship bill processions in various parts of the state. However, they had to return from Keishampat junction after being stopped by police. Amuco president Ph Deban Sharma said the bill is a ploy to wipe out the indigenous people of the northeast.All Manipur Students’ Union (Amsu) president Manjit Sarangthem called on the people of the region to fight collectively against the bill.The All Kakching Students’ Union, Students’ Union of Kangleipak and Kakching Keithel Apunba Ima Lup took out a rally at Kakching Bazar.At Heirok Bazar in Thoucal district, a large number of people formed a human chain to oppose the bill..
