Solid waste generation increase by 30% ahead of Diwali

Though there is no increase in generation of wet waste, the solid waste generation has risen by up to 300 metric tonne per day,” IMC waste management consultant Asad Warsi told TOI.Warsi said it has apparently worked in favour of rag-pickers, who are engaged in segregation of solid waste at their material recovery facility. Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) is collecting 300 metric tonne of extra solid waste from households for the past one week.Civic body officials said usually the daily collection of solid waste is calculated to be 500-600 metric tonne, but, it has increased up to 900 metric tonne per day in a week.“Daily waste generation in city has increased by up to 30% since due to cleaning work for Diwali festival. “They are getting huge waste to segregate and sell to private agencies,” he said.Officials at trenching ground said the number of rag-pickers have also increased at material recovery facility. But for the past few days more than 900 rag-pickers are working at the ground.To support the rag-pickers, the civic body has also increased shift timing at material recovery facility..
