It airport had started generating 22% of extra solid waste since the beginning of this year.An official said, the generation of wet waste, which was between 5kg and 10kg per day a year ago, has also gone up to 20kg per day, apparently because of more food outlets operating on the airport premises. The waste generation has increased because of rapidly growing footfall and commencement of 24x7 operations. “We have constructed a compost pit near the old terminal building, where wet waste is converted into compost, while dry waste is handed over to civic body daily for disposal and recycling,” she said.In addition to this, 10 smart dustbins, which set off alarm before getting filled up with garbage, have also been installed at different strategic locations inside the airport terminal building for timely collection of waste. Also, 19 food outlets have become operational at the airport.Airport director Aryama Sanyal told TOI that surge in number of passengers have led to this increase in the amount of waste generation.“Indore airport had an annual footfall of around 20 lakh. But, this time, more than 23.43 lakh passengers have already passed through the airport between January and October and it is expected to cross 25 lakh by the end of December,” she said.Sanyal claimed that they had increased their waste collection and disposal efficiency to deal with increased amount of waste..
