Raj to ‘replicate’ Ujjain cancer care model

Jaipur: The health department is taking lessons from Ujjain’s hospital in developing cancer care facilities in its district hospitals across the state.The health department had sent its nurses and doctors to Ujjain for training.With increase in cancer patients and limited cancer care facilities in hospitals attached to government medical colleges, the state government has decided to launch district cancer care programme. Developing cancer care facilities in district hospitals will help decongesting hospitals attached to medical colleges such as Sawai Man Singh Hospital in Jaipur.Under the programme, the district hospitals will provide palliative care and supportive treatment to the patients. It was seven-day hands on training for doctors and nurses completed their hands on training in 15 days.According to the health department officials, Ujjain's district hospital has now taken lead in cancer care. “Every day 8-10 cancer patients are coming for treatment in Ujjain’s civil hospital,” the official said.Recently, health department has taken decision on screening of women above 30 for cancer. The hospital has facilities such as chemotherapy, palliative care and screening for cancer.Besides, the health department has also sent 66 nurses posted in 33 district hospitals across the state to Ujjain for hands on training on palliative and supportive care of cancer patients..
