11 ‘diphtheria’ cases in Sawai Madhopur

JAIPUR: Eleven suspected cases of diphtheria , which is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening bacterial disease, have been found in Sawai Madhopur’s Kotra area.Surfacing of diphtheria cases raises question on effective implementation of national vaccination programme. “We suspected that these are diphtheria cases. The Centre has directed health department to fully vaccinate 90% of children by December end. For that purpose, we inspected the area on September 15 and found 11 such cases,” said, Dr Tajram Meena, chief medical health officer, Sawai Madhopur.It is the disease which spreads through direct physical contact. Diphtheria can be prevented through vaccine..
