Summary:

JAIPUR: In its reply to State Human Rights Commission’s initiative to protect rights of women in live-in relationships under Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, the police department has suggested registration of live-in relationships and to make the provision of order from courts in case the relationship is broken.“Registration of live-in relationships is essential and there is need to specify a process to cancel the registration,” argued the police. There is also a need for amendment to the Hindu Marriage Act with the addition of ‘women in live-in relationships’ to protect the right of women in live-ins, it was pointed out. The commission had asked how far the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, be applied in the case of live-in relations. The implication of this provision is to avoid cases of rape foisted on partners, after failed live-ins. The department suggested that in case a partner from a live-in opts out of the relation and wants to marry another person without the consent of the other, in such cases police intervention is called for..
