Drive to boost green cover across Steel City

JAMSHEDPUR: Dhalbhum forest division is carrying a 10 lakh sapling plantation drive with an aim to upgrade the green cover near the industrial plants and augment the villagers' income.Village forest management committees (VFMCs), who are the executioners of this project, were outsourced by forest officials for the green project. "On an average, 150 man-days is generated per hectare through this drive, as the saplings are planted on a 500-hectare area," Alam said. "Our goals are to revive the deforest area by planting saplings and provide a livelihood opportunity to the rural people, especially the women. "Soil conservation work is also going on in some parts of the division area with the local villagers actively participating in the project," the DFO said adding that the ongoing sapling work will continue till September..
