Vulnerable antelope species found in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

KOZHIKODE: The presence of the highly elusive four-horned antelope (Tetracerus quadricornis), has been established in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (WWS) with cameratrap recording showing two individuals in the Ottipara section under Sultan Bathery range of the sanctuary.Presently confined to the Indian sub-continent, the fourhorned antelope (FHA) is listed as ‘Vulnerable’ in the IUCN Red list. Their numbers were estimated at less than 10,000 mature individuals in the wild in Nepal and India in 2001. The species is protected under Schedule-I of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972). Though solitary by nature, it may form loose groups of three to five — with one or more adults — sometimes accompanied by juveniles. The second pair of horns sprouts at an age of about 14-15 months, though this age may vary depending upon various factors..
