Kerala records highest August rain in 90 years

A fresh spell of active rainfall commenced since August 8 and continued till August 16,” an IMD statement said. Idukki’s average rainfall from August 1 to 20 is 1,419.6mm, which exceeds the previous highest August rainfall of 1,387.1mm recorded in 1907.The rainfall received by the entire state in this season was 42% excess. The state received 770mm rain in this period, the highest quantum of rain in August since 1932, India meteorological department (IMD) data indicates.While the state received 1,132mm of rain in August in 1931, the maximum-ever recorded August rainfall for the state, it got 877mm in 1923, the second highest, and 851mm in 1907.The highest excess rainfall in southwest monsoon was recorded in Idukki district , 93% above normal, followed by Palakkad -- 73%. As per IMD’s latest data, the rainfall over the state during June, July and August (August 1-19) has been 15%, 18% and164% above normal, respectively.The highest amount of rainfall recorded in a region on a single day was 40cm in Nilamboor on August 9 and 35cm recorded in Peermade on August16.“There were two consecutive active spells with above normal rainfall peaking around June 14 and June 20, respectively..
