‘Routine eye check-up can help detect diabetic retinopathy’

KOCHI: Early detection of eye problems in diabetic patients can lessen severe problems and a routine eye exam, done every few months, can check diabetic retinopathy, said chairman emeritus of Aravind Eye Care System, Coimbatore, Dr P Namperumalsamy.“There are no visible symptoms for eye problem in diabetes cases. Around one-third of the 65 million diabetic patients in India suffer from blindness.Dr Namperumalsamy said among eye diseases, glaucoma, double vision, nerve palsy are common conditions. The symptoms include blood spots in eye, oozing of blood from the eyes. Not everyone will go and check their sugar levels unless there is some issue that requires a blood test. We charge fee from 35% of our patients who can afford surgeries and ensure free surgeries for the remaining 65% poor and needy patients..
