75% of migrant students proficient in Malayalam

KOCHI: About 75% of migrant children under the ‘Roshni’ project are proficient in reading and writing Malayalam , shows a social audit by the district administration.Roshni, a one of a kind of project started to provide education for the children of migrant labourers in the district, was started in October 2017. Since they do not have a common language, the tutors instruct them in a combination of Malayalam, English and Hindi,” said Prakash.As part of the project, the children are also provided with breakfast before classes commence. They can be be taught other languages only if they know basics of the Malayalam language,” said C K Prakash, general coordinator of the project.Teachers, parents, academicians, cultural experts and various people’s representatives are part of the social audit.The official website of Roshni and the release of the social audit report will be done by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on November 10 at Fine Arts Hall in Kochi.About 25 volunteers who are skilled in various teachers’ training programmes along with expertise in Oriya, Hindi and Bengali will instruct the students as part of the scheme.“The students who hail from different states in the country are taught using the strategy of code switching. The project which was limited to just four schools was extended to 20 schools in the district this academic year.The social audit which started on October 29 shows that about three-fourth of the students who were part of the project are capable of reading, writing and understanding Malayalam language.District collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla told TOI that the social audit was done to assess the progress of the projectsothatitcan becontinued as a permanent facility for migrant students.“Along with imparting education, this project will also increase their level of social participation,” the collector said.Currently around 610 students are beneficiaries of the initiative, which was started with the support of the district panchayat, education department and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Safirulla said the project will be extended to 15 more schools in the district.“Through the social audit we evaluated how much the students are proficient in Malayalam..
