Ernakulam might just escape drought: Collector’s meet

“As the irrigations projects have been implemented in Choondi, Pizhala and West Kochi, water scarcity will not hit the areas again. As many as 136 lift-irrigation projects are functioning well, the meeting noted. There are 376 hand pumps in the district and out of them, 120 are being repaired.Uninterrupted water supply will continue till May 31, Safirulla said. A total of 150 more water bodies district will be revived before May 31 with the support of National Rural Employment Guarantee workers,” he said.The meeting also asked officials to strengthen special squads that carry out tests and inspect water theft.“We will also hold a meeting with people’s representatives and officials on Friday again to discuss about the preparation,” the disaster management official said. KOCHI: Even when the state is staring at a drought this summer , the Ernakulam district is not likely to face any such situation, noted a meeting convened by collector K Mohammed Y Safirulla on Tuesday.The meeting, attended by officials from health, irrigation, revenue, motor vehicle and local bodies, noted that as there are no complaints from residents about water scarcity and irrigation projects are in full swing there is no cause of worry.The meeting asked officials to identify 10 water resources in each taluk and test the quality of water..
