Despite ban, plastic waste doubles during Diwali

KOLHAPUR: The Kolhapur Municiple Corporation has found that the amount of plastic waste generated in the city has almost doubled during Diwali Despite plastic ban and KMC 's appeals to not use the plastic, a large quantity of plastic bags and non-biodegradable materials has been dispensed by some traders. At some places, the plastic is segregated, however, it gets mixed with regular waste and is dumped at the disposal site. After receiving complaints from some citizens, we have cleared the plastic waste and have sent it for recycling. However, since last couple of days the bins overflowing with the waste mostly comprise plastic carry bags.Vijay Patil, chief sanitation inspector of KMC said, "We have reported the plastic waste being thrown in open.
