KMC needs 300 porters for Durga idol immersions

KOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation needs 300 porters for a smooth immersion of Durga idols at some of the major ghats along the Hooghly river . In addition, the KMC conservancy department has been asked to demolish an unauthorised structure at Doighat (Kidderpore) before immersion begins. The decision was taken by a group of KMC officials led by Debasish Kumar, member, mayor-in-council overseeing the KMC parks department during an inspection of these ghats on Saturday morning. The immersion process will start on October 19 and will continue for next two days.During the three-day immersion process, major ghats such as, Bajekadamtolla (Babughat), Princep Ghat and Nimtolla Ghat will accommodate as many as 2,000 idols and hence the civic body needs 300 porters to ensure that no puja organizers have to stand in long queues to wait for their turn. “We have requested the Kolkata Police top brass to approach the ER authorities to do the needful in this regard,” said a KMC parks department official.This apart, the KMC conservancy and lighting department chiefs have been asked to take up a major cleanliness drive on these ghats and arrange for proper lighting during the immersion days..
