KMC brings in provisions to send owners of unsafe buildings to jail

"There are a number of unsafe buildings in the city that poses threat to its residents and endanger public safety. Altogether, 22 people had died after portions of a highly dangerous building fell on them in 2017. Under Section 404 of the KMC Building Rules, the Municipal Commissioner under special circumstances can exercise his powers to ask inmates of insecure buildings to vacate the structures for public and their safety. The KMC has applied this for vacating a number of dangerous and dilapidated buildings in the city. The KMC had passed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill in the state assembly in March 2017 that owners of dangerous and dilapidated buildings may apply to the KMC with rehabilitation package for the tenants..
