Uttar Pradesh govt derecognises madrassa over national anthem row

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government has derecognised the madrassa in Maharajganj where the principal and a cleric had stopped singing of national anthem during Independence Day function. In addition to de-recognition, all financial assistance to the institution under the madrassa modernization scheme of the state government is also being stopped, Pandey said.The order stated, “No member or office-bearer of the madrassa’s management committee was present during the flag-hoisting ceremony. It also suspended all financial assistance to the madrassa.Madrassa Education Board registrar S N Pandey who issued the order, said that Madrassa Arabia Ahle Sunnat Anware Tayyaba Girls’ College at Malangdih in Maharajganj district has been derecognised on the basis of the findings of enquiry conducted by the district minority officer. While this shows their lack of interest in the affairs of the madrassa, the institution also lacks the sufficient number of students and teachers as requisite under the law.”Sunil Tripathi, a teacher who teaches science at the madrassa under Madrassa Modernisation Scheme had protested the cleric’s action, shot a video of the incident and posted it on social media.The principal Faizlur Rehman and local cleric Junaid Ansari were arrested by police and a case of treason was registered against them after the video of the incident went viral on social media.DM Amarnath Upadhyay had directed the district minority officer Prabhat Kumar to investigate the matter..
