Traffic takes turn for good after erickshaw ban

LUCKNOW:The Regional Transport Office’s (RTO) decision to ban e-rickshaws on 10 major routes in the city has led to fewer jams on roads over the past three days. RTO had banned erickshaws from plying on 10 important stretches in Lucknow Thursday onwards. Officials are are now planning to extend the restriction to 32 more routes in Lucknow from January.Ever since the ban was enforced, 50 e-rickshaws have been seized and 250 drivers have been challaned for violation of rules. ASP ( traffic ), RS Nim, said “During registration, e-rickshaw drivers have to sign a bond, whereby they agree to not drive on main roads but only on connecting routes and inside colonies.”“We have identified more main routes where these vehicles will not be allowed to ply,” said assistant regional transport officer (enforcement) Sanjeev Gupta.The movement of e-rickshaws will be stopped on at least 32 routes, he added.Going by the number of registered vehicles, at least 17,000 e-rickshaws are currently plying in the city..
