Scholarship scam: 38 ghost schools unearthed by EOW

LUCKNOW: The economic offences wing (EOW) of UP Police has registered two FIRs in the Rs 2 crore scholarship fund scam in Etawah. The probe is also under way in Meerut and Kanpur.The Yogi government had ordered a statewide probe into the scholarship scam after coming to power in 2017. “Until now, Rs 2 crore embezzlement of scholarship money has come to the fore,” said a source. The scam was busted in the scholarship money issued for students of classes 6-8 of schools in the year 2008-09.In the first FIR registered against 65 junior and primary schools, EOW has named principals and managers whose schools had shown higher enrolment to draw more scholarship money from the government in connivance with officials, while 38 ‘ghost’ schools existed only on paper.“During probe, the addresses of 38 schools turned out to be empty land, forest areas or homes..
