Punjab government gives go-ahead to Rs 2 crore for Udham Singh memorial at Sunam

PATIALA: The Punjab government has approved a sum of Rs 2.28 crore for setting up Shaheed Udham Singh memorial at his native town Sunam. He later tweeted, “Today, on the martyrdom day of the great revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh, we have decided to give this icon of the freedom movement a befitting memorial at his birthplace in Sunam. We’ve released Rs 1 cr of the total Rs 2.28 cr that’s been earmarked for the project”.Others who also addressed the gathering included cabinet ministers Razia Sultana , Vijayinder Singla, chairman of Punjab Mandi Board and former finance minister Lal Singh. The memorial will come up on Mansa-Bhikhi Road for which the first installment of Rs 1 crore would be released soon.While the CM was to preside over the event, he could not attend the function due to some exigency. The announcement in this regard was made during the state level function held here to mark his 79th martyrdom day.Punjab cabinet minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, who presided over the event as chief guest, said chief minister Amarinder Singh had sanctioned the grant to fulfill the long-pending demand of the locals to have a memorial in the name of the martyr..
