Power demand rises, Punjab may fire up units at Ropar plant

PATIALA: The Punjab government has decided to restart operations at two thermal units of Ropar power plant to meet the state’s rising demand.The demand for power went up to 12500 MW recently. “The government is ready to ignite the two units at Ropar thermal power plant in case demand goes beyond 13,000 MW. The state government has to pay a subsidy of over Rs 13,000 crore to the power corporation during the present fiscal. He said the extra power was at the disposal of the power corporation due to the arrangements that were in place.Earlier, on August 7, 2018, the PSPCL had supplied 12,556 MW of peak power demand. It was said the six units were being shut down forever as these had outlived their lives and cost of generating power was higher as compared to power available in the open market.Cabinet power minister for power Gurpreet Singh Kangar said the PSPCL had put in place an arrangement to meet the rise in demand for power..
