Probe ordered against seven cops for slapping, 'illegally' detaining student leaders

PATIALA: Senior Superintendent of police Sangrur on Tuesday ordered a departmental probe against seven cops including a station house officer for allegedly slapping and then ‘illegal’ detaining two student leaders, last Saturday.SSP Sandeep Kumar Garg said he had received a complaint alleging that station house officer of city police station Vinod Kumar , along with a police party, had slapped two student leaders of Punjab Student Union Shaheed Randhawa (PSUSR) at the main gates of Government Ranbir College. On Saturday, when the two leaders- Hoshiar Singh and Ramanpreet Singh- were pursuing the students to participate in the seminar, a police team led by SHO Vinod Kumar reached there and slapped the two.Following the incident, a number of student organisation threatened to hold a protest at the office of the SSP on Wednesday. Later, the two leaders were detained and taken to the police station, where they were again thrashed.It was learnt that the PSUSR had organised a seminar on the college premises on various issues related to students for which a verbal permission had been taken from the college authorities, on Friday. However, after the departmental probe was ordered, the student organisations called off their protest.Those against whom the probe has been ordered include SHO Vinod Kumar, Sub Inspectors Jasbir and Gurtej Singh, head constables Gagandeep and Kulwinder Singh along with two home guards Abdul Sattar and Kapil Sharma.The SSP said the probe will be conducted by DSP Sangrur and if found guilty action would be taken against the cops.Meanwhile, it is the third incident of police torture after the incident of a youth from Sanour in Patiala being beaten up by the cops inside a police station, earlier this month and an old woman being thrashed and dragged from the hair during a protest against a brick kiln owner at Sukhanand village in Bathinda on Saturday, in which the cops have been accused of violating the humans rights..
