Rs 1 crore street project halts in Patiala

PATIALA: The civic body here has marked a probe against a contractor, who was using poor quality tiles for the construction of streets at Focal Point in Patiala . The probe will reveal if there is involvement of any official,” said commissioner Patiala municipal corporation, G S Khaira. This has stopped the work of a 12-km stretch that has remained in poor condition for a long time.It was learnt that the tiles that were laid here failed quality tests.The project to repair and construct roads at Focal Point was given to a contractor after floating tenders. The amount of Rs1.5 crore was supposed to be paid to him, and as per the rules he was given some amount in advance.“Two months ago, the MC started the work in the area after a long time, which now has been stopped again,” said Ashwini Kumar, president of factory association at Focal Point in Patiala.It is worth mentioning here that around 400 industries in the area pay Rs 25 lakh per annum as property tax, along with Rs 15 lakh water and sewerage charges, to the corporation.“I received the complaint only a few days ago, following which an inquiry was marked against the contractor..
