Nirmala Devi, mother of the victim, accused her brother-in-law, Raj Kumar, of allegedly raping her 19-year-old daughter about ten months ago. Devi alleged that Raj Kumar raped her younger daughter when he found her alone at home. Considering the birth of a child before marriage a stigma, Nirmala Devi and her husband gave the child to Surjit Singh, a sweeper at the Civil Hospital. Kataria said Raj Kumar had been arrested but the police were yet to ascertain whether any financial transaction has taken place between the family and Surjit Singh..
