Elder abuse more from sons than daughters-in-law: survey

more-inA survey by HelpAge India on abuse of elders has revealed that old people are more likely to face abuse from their sons rather than their daughters-in-law. Similarly, the common forms of abuse were verbal abuse, disrespect and neglect, the survey found. The survey report, titled ‘Elder abuse in India 2018 – changing cultural and impact of technology,’ released here on Thursday, a day ahead of the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, points out that 52 % of elders nation-wide perceived their sons to be the perpetrators while only 34 % said that their daughter-in-law were the perpetrators. The survey was conducted in 23 cities across the country by interviewing 5,014 elders.
