Forest guards fire in air in attempt to stop cattle thieves

MANGALURU: Forest officials seized a vehicle and rescued four head of cattle that was allegedly being stolen near Aletti forest checkpost on the Karnataka-Kerala border in Sullia , in the wee hours of Sunday. Forest guards fired a couple of rounds in the air, but the thieves still managed to escape.V Karikalan, DCF, Mangaluru Division, told TOI that the incident took place around 3.30am. Karikalan said police from Dakshina Kannada have alerted their Kerala counterparts and the case has been shifted to Sullia police station. However, instead of stopping the vehicle continued to accelerate and guards fired in the air to stop them, Karikalan said.The thieves stopped their vehicle some distance away from the checkpost and the occupants then fled on foot. Kalabhairava , a special team of the forest department that was on night patrol , had flagged down a goods vehicle for inspection..
