Mangaluru police seize sand worth Rs 5 lakh

MANGALURU: Personnel of Mangaluru Rural police station and the anti-rowdy squad headed by assistant commissioner of police, Mangaluru south sub-division, raided three private places at Valachil Adyar and Arkula on a tip-off that sand was illegally stored there on Thursday.The police who informed the officials of the department of mines and geology of these spots, later seized nearly 780 tonnes of sand, which is around 78 truckloads of sand, valued at Rs 5 lakh.Police have started an investigation into the reasons why this large quantity of sand has been stored in the area, while handing over the sand to the deputy director of the department.The raid was carried out on directions from T R Suresh, city police chief under the supervision of Uma Prashanth, deputy commissioner of police (crime and traffic)..
