Fishermen rescued from vessel off Karwar

Mangaluru: Indian Coast Guard (ICG) interceptor boat ICGS C-155 on Thursday rescued fishermen on board Karwar fishing boat ‘Yashwardhan’. ICGS C-155 based at Karwar on routine security patrol was immediately diverted to render assistance to the fishing boat, which on arrival took 17 crew onboard. Acting on information given by Ghanshyam, a local fisherman, to the ICG station at Karwar at 1.30pm about the fishing boat reporting hull damage and flooding, the Indian Coast Guard diverted its interceptor boat to the spot to aid in the rescue of stranded fishermen on board.The fishermen were stranded on board the stricken vessel some 10 nautical miles from Karwar off Loliem Point (Polen) along the Karnataka-Goa border. The remaining 12 crew with five crew of ICGS C-155 stayed on board the fishing boat ‘Yashwardhan’ for removing water from the boat.DIG S S Dasila, commander, Coast Guard Karnataka, said an ICG diver has also been stationed on board the fishing boat, and it is planned to tow the boat to Karwar..
