Meerut: In view of the high mortality rate in Uttar Pradesh, Meerut women district hospital is set to give ‘kangaroo’ lessons to the mothers here. The lives of many infants saved if their mothers kept them close to themselves and in contact of their skin. The facility was inaugurated by chief development officer Aryakha Akhori in Meerut.“At least three nurses have been trained for the purpose so that they can help the mothers in feeding their infants and keep them in close contact of their skin,” said Dr Verma. The lessons will guide mothers to keep their infants close to them so that their body temperature is maintained and hence reducing morbidity.State family welfare minister Rita Bahuguna Joshi, on Wednesday, inaugurated 101 such centres to help the district reduce the child mortality rate.“Now that the centre has been inaugurated, it will help in reduction of morbidity among infants. Since most of the women fail to follow that, infants die of hypothermia – which refers to reduced body temperature that happens when a body dissipates more heat than it absorbs,” said Dr Manisha Verma, chief medical superintendent, Meerut district women hospital.The unit, which is fully air conditioned and made with a colour theme of blue and pink will admit infants up to 1 year age with complications so that with their mothers can breast feed them and keep in close contact..
