Meerut district hospital to get acoustic room to test hearing impairment

The district hospital in Meerut is all set to get an acoustic room (sound-proof) room for audiometry in order to test the level of hearing impairment in people.

"The construction of an acoustic room will soon start inside the premises of PL Sharma district hospital, which will be used for audiometry i.e.

"Doctors from the hospital will be sent for training to Lucknow and once that is done, construction of the acoustic room will start.

"According to the information available on NPPCD`s online portal, hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit in humans.

The construction of the room in PL Sharma hospital will start in a few days after doctors are trained for handling the procedure.The room is being constructed under central government`s National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD).Speaking to TOI, Dr.

PK Bansal, superintendent-in-chief, PL Sharma district hospital, said, "NPPCD is a project of the central government, which aims to prevent and control major causes of hearing impairment, so as to reduce the total burden by 25%.

Now, the focus of the health authorities has started moving from communicable diseases to non-communicable diseases and efforts are being made to achieve them."According to the information available on NPPCD`s online portal, hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit in humans.

As per WHO estimates in India, there are approximately 63 million people, who are suffering from significant auditory impairment; this places the estimated prevalence at 6.3% in Indian population.
