Mumbai: Vasai-Virar civic officer held for extortion

MUMBAI: An assistant commissioner of the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) was arrested for allegedly demanding extortion money from a builder. Premsingh Jadhav allegedly demanded Rs 25 lakhs from a builder to not take action against his illegal construction in Manvelpada, Virar ( east) between October and November 2016.The builder in his complaint to Virar police alleged that Jadhav accepted Rs 5 lakhs in the municipality office.Jadhav had allegedly threatened about information regarding illegal construction being sought under the RTI by an activist.Interestingly, Yadav has been instrumental in filing police cases against a few builders who have indulged in massive illegal constructions in the region.The builder alleged that Yadav came to his construction site and demanded the money.Around 19 cases of extortion have been filed against various people so far in the Vasai-Virar region.The prominent ones like Shiv Sena Corporator from Nalasopara Dhananjay Gawde, NCP Vasai-Virar chief Govind Gunjalkar and a journalist Shashikant Karpe who are charged with extortion are still absconding..
