Maharashtra: 639 farmers committed suicide in three months

Summary:

While 639 farmers have committed suicide in 3 months between March 1 and May 31 this year, the state government said that of the 639 cases, 122 suicides do not fall under farmers' suicide criterion and were declared ineligible for compensation. The opposition had asked about the number of farmers that committed suicide in the last three months and the status of compensation provided to the family of the deceased. He informed that Government would consider these farmers' as special case for providing loan waiver benefits. While 329 cases are pending for further investigation, the government has paid compensation in only 174 cases.
