20,000 Mum automen ply sans badges, say unions

MUMBAI: In an alarming disclosure on Sunday, autorickshaw unions said of the one lakh new drivers who have begun plying in Mumbai in the past two years, nearly 20,000 do not have the mandatory badges and close to 5,000 do not wear the khaki uniform. The RTO has, in the past six months, booked more than 2,000 drivers, for operating without badges or uniforms.Shashank Rao of Mumbai Autorickshawmen's Union said such drivers usually operate in cartels. On both occasions, he paid Rs200 and got away.Transport experts called for a strong deterrent for such drivers.
