CNG rates: Mumbai taxis want Rs 25 as min fare

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Taximen's Union will make a fresh demand of Rs25 as minimum taxi fare, up from Rs22 following the huge hike of Rs3.44 in CNG rates from Tuesday. Auto unions have also proposed a Rs2 hike in fares and submitted a memorandum to the transport department.Sources said the department will forward the proposals to Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority to take a final call.Consumer groups like the Mumbai Grahak Panchayat are opposing any hike in fares unless the government accepts and implements Khatua committee's suggestions.The panel had suggested telescopic fares wherein it drops as the distance increases, while it had also recommended Happy Hours and discounted fares for commuters of autos and Kaali Peeli taxis.
