Ahead of festival season, mayor for promoting eco-friendly immersions

NAGPUR: With just two months left for Ganesh Utsav , the Nagpur Municipal Corporation seemed gear up to protect city’s water bodies from pollution. So far, the NMC has received demands to set up 112 artificial tanks for immersion of idols, this was revealed by deputy municipal commissioner Jayant Dandegaonkar. The NMC is also exploring the possibilities of providing online application facilities for mandals.The meeting was attended by former mayor Pravin Datke, standing committee chairman Virendra Kukreja, health committee chairman Manoj Chafle, senior corporators Sunil Agrawal, deputy ruling party leaders Balya Borkar, Varsha Thakre, health officer (sanitation) Dr Pradip Dasarwar, chief fire officer Rajendra Uchake and others. Besides this, the NMC will try to identify abandoned quarries in and around the city, Dandegaonkar informed the mayor.Apart from preventing immersion of idols in water bodies, the NMC will also install kalash (container) for collecting nirmalaya at every immersion spot.This year, the NMC will also set up single window systems at all 10 zones wherein mandals can get permissions from various departments like charity commissioner, fire department, police department, traffic department etc. Last year, the civic body had imposed a blanket ban on immersion of idols in lakes including Gandhi Sagar , Sonegaon and Sakkardara and it helped the NMC to protect these lakes from pollution, said mayor Nanda Jichkar on Tuesday.Jichkar convened a review meeting on NMC’s preparedness for upcoming Ganesh festival and Navratri.This year too, the NMC will put in more efforts to protect all water bodies as it has already started preparations for installing more artificial tanks across the city..
