Patkar to lead rally for liquor ban

Yavatmal: Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar will on Friday lead a protest rally for demanding total liquor ban in Yavatmal. The rally would be held under the aegis of Swamini Daru Bandi Andolan Samiti of Yavatmal.“Others who are scheduled to attend the rally include Chandrapur-based Shramik Elgar leader Paromita Goswami, political critic Yogesh Yadav and Pratibha Shinde,” said chief coordinator of Swamini Mahesh Pawar at a press conference on Thursday.According to Pawar, the government is ignoring Swamini’s demand for ban on manufacture, sale and consumption of liquor in Yavatmal for the last four years“Hitherto, rural women folk have participated in our agitations. Now, the urban women are extending their support,” said Mahesh Pawar said, adding that they have received written consent from over 150 organizations including NGOs in support of the agitation.“The rally would be flagged off from local postal ground,” Pawar said.Pawar also said that five old women from Maregaon tehsil of Yavatmal have started their journey on foot and would reach Yavatmal on Friday after covering 90km..
