Nods to coal-based plants down, yet govt brings 3 more in March

Referring to the government database, the report stated that over 40GW of the country’s coal plants are financially stressed. Of the total 17.6GW power generation capacity added in 2018, about 74% comprised of renewable energy sources primarily solar power. A day later, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) granted investment approvals to two new power plants in Khurja (Uttar Pradesh) and Buxar (Bihar), worth Rs11,089 crore and 10,439 crore, respectively.Activists have slammed the government for continuing investments in new plants, in spite of unfavourable market conditions for coal power.
