District administration plans workshops on plastic ban

NASHIK: The district administration has planned a couple of workshops of elected representatives as well as the local self-governing bodies to implement the plastic ban effectively, district collector Radhakrishnan B said.“We have already instructed all the local self-governing bodies to ensure the plastic ban is implemented strictly. The three-month grace period ended on June 23.The collector added that the onus of implementing the ban is on the local bodies and the administration would ensure coordination wherever required.The workshops are likely to be held once the election to Maharashtra Legislative Council , Teachers Constituency is over. “After the election, we will discuss and plan accordingly,” the collector, who presides over the district environment committee, said.A senior officer from Maharashtra Pollution Control Board said a lot of awareness had been carried out in the rural areas. Officials of the gram panchayat , the municipalities and the municipal councils have been made aware of the ban.“We will be assessing the situation on Monday about the actions taken by the bodies across the district and the division as well,” the officer said. We also plan to conduct a workshop of the elected representatives and the local governing bodies to ensure the ban is successful,” he said.The Maharashtra government introduced a ban on plastic under the Maharashtra Plastic Carry Bags Rules, 2006 Maharashtra Bio-degradable and Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 2006 on March 23.Traders and manufacturers had knocked the doors of the high court against the government decision and were granted a three-month respite to dispose of the plastic in their possession..
