Even different banks can join hands to deploy at least one guard for ATMs in close proximity with each other,” said Singal. He further said that there is an international norm about security of off-site ATMs, which banks must follow. The off-site ATMs are easy targets for the burglars in absence of the guards. The police came to know of the incident seven hours later after local residents informed them.“None of the ATMs that I inspected had any guards. There is an imperative need for the banks to have safety mechanism in such ATMs,” Singal told TOI.According to him, if deployment of guards is not possible then, at least, these ATMs must have an alarm system in case of any attempt of tampering.“My feedback is that many of the off-site ATMs do not also have alarm system. If preventive steps are taken, we can reduce such incidents in the city,” he added.“However,” he said, “it is impossible for the police to keep a constant watch on all the off-site ATMs in the city..
