Summary:

GHAZIABAD: The stamps and registration department has refused to comply with a directive of GDA vice-chairperson Ritu Maheshwari asking it to stop registries of illegal buildings . “This is to curb the growth of illegal buildings in the city. However, the problem is that as per the UP Stamps and Registration Act, there is no such provision under which we can deny registry as long as the papers and documents are with the buyer.”The GDA vice-chairperson has summoned the officials from the department seeking an answer for their refusal to comply with the orders. “Apart from apprising the vice-chairperson, we have also written to higher officials seeking their direction on the issue,” said the official.Earlier, the GDA had also written to the electricity and water departments to verify map approval from the development agency’s website before giving power or water connections. In a letter to the state, the department has claimed that there is no provision in the UP Stamps and Registration Act wherein the registry could be stopped if the owner has the documents.“We had received a written order from the GDA vice-chairperson dated August 8 in which we were directed to check map approvals from GDA’s website before initiating the process of registry,” said an official..
