Puducherry | Friday | 2nd April, 2021

Summary:

BJP is accused of using Aadhaar data in the Puducherry assembly election campaign, Madras HC asks UIDAI and EC to investigate the serious issue.

.

A Madras High Court order is set to shock the BJP in the Puducherry assembly election.

It has asked the UIDAI to find out from where the BJP`s Puducherry unit took out the mobile numbers of the voters.

The court has also asked the Election Commission and the police to continue their investigation and submit the report after six weeks.

Elections are going to be held in Puducherry and in this sense, this order of the court can be harmful for the BJP.

The court`s decision came on a petition filed by A Anand, the chairman of the State Committee of DYFI, the youth wing of the Communist Party of India.

Anand alleged, that the details of voters associated with Aadhaar were used for the BJP`s election campaign.

Anand said that he and other residents of the Union Territory received invitations links in the form of a message from the BJP on their phones for allegedly joining booth-level WhatsApp groups.

The plea states that the messages were received only on the phone numbers which were linked to the Aadhaar card, while the numbers not linked to Aadhaar did not receive any such messages.

A division bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamurthy rejected the BJP Puducherry`s stance that it had acquired mobile numbers through door-to-door campaigns conducted by party workers.
