Pune: The irrigation department on Friday stopped release of water into the Mutha right bank canal. The water was being released for winter crops as the first rotation and about 4 TMC water was released from the Khadakwasla dam.The cap on the release will help the irrigation department initiate repair of the canal. The lack of maintenance had led to seepage at many locations, besides damaging the wall structure.Irrigation department officials said adequate funds were available for the repair work to be taken up in the next few days. It will be empty as the Pune Municipal Corporation has stopped lifting water from the canal after commissioning a pipeline from the Parvati water works to the Cantonment water works. The pipeline is expected to save about 100-150 MLD water.Repair and maintenance of the canal was not possible until now because of continuous flow of water into it, sources said..
