High court judge lauds lsquohistoricrsquo epayment plan

PUNE: The e-payment service that will be implemented on a pilot basis is crucial, said Justice A K Menon of the Bombay high court here on Saturday.The project deals with the online payment of fines, court fees and costs. He advised the gathering to make good use of the advent of the technology and adopt security measures to prevent cybercrime.Citing the example of the “paperless” Delhi high court, where judges and lawyers have started using laptops and tablets, Justice Menon said the Bombay high court too will follow suit in the days to come. The Supreme Court e-courts committee had selected Pune to pilot the project as it is the biggest judicial district in Maharashtra.The project was inaugurated by Justice Menon at Ashoka hall of the Shivajinagar district and sessions court here.Addressing judges, lawyers and members of the Pune Bar Association, Justice Menon described the launch of the service as historic. “The journey of the e-payment service is slow, but in the future it will benefit the courts,” he said.“The SC committee has praised the work and initiatives taken by the judiciary in Maharashtra and accordingly a decision to implement the pilot project in Pune was taken,” he added.The city court has received two point-of-sale (PoS) machines. Two transactions, of Rs1,250 and Rs2,000, were made by lawyers Vishwas Kharabe and Dakshata Subandh respectively on behalf of their clients, by swiping a debit card and via netbanking.Principal district and sessions judge S B Agarwal, State Bank of India general manager G M Baldev, additional sessions judge A S Mahatme, PBA president S B Pawar, civil judge A D Bose, senior court manager Atul Zende and others were present at the function..
