38 colleges in Maharashtra shut engineering courses over poor enrolment

PUNE: As many as 38 colleges in the state discontinued their engineering course in 2018-19 due to poor enrolment, director of technical education Abhay Wagh said here on Sunday.Wagh said there were close to 1.65 lakh engineering seats in 365 colleges and 70,000 seats in 450 polytechnic institutes in Maharashtra last year. He was in Pune to inaugurate a new website for the accreditation of engineering colleges in the state.“There has been a huge gap between demand and supply in this field in the recent years. Now, there are 327 colleges with 1.27 lakh engineering seats in the state,” Wagh said.Wagh said polytechnic students have been asked to do compulsory internship in the third and fourth semester. A website on the status of the National Board of Accreditation status portal was inaugurated by minister Vinod Tawde on Sunday.To get accredited by the national body, colleges have to meet nine parameters..
