Pune: Cops stop weddings of two minors

PUNE: Police thwarted a child marriage bid on Friday after receiving a tip-off on weddings involving two minor girls at Erandwane.The girls, aged 15 and 14, were to be married to older men — aged 25 and 30, respectively. The two men approached the girl’s mother with the marriage proposal. “Both the girls are brilliant and had scored over 85% marks in their preliminary examinations,” Lagad said. “The girls also worked as maids due to their mother’s illness. Due to the poor economic condition of the family, the woman agreed to the wedding,” said senior inspector Deepak Lagad from the Deccan Gymkhana police station.The minors appeared for their last SSC examination on Friday..
