200kg stale food items destroyed during raids

Rajkot: Health officials of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Friday destroyed over 200kg of stale and unhygienic food items during raids conducted at a city-based mall and a supermarket.RMC officials found stale food items, vegetables and fruits with fungus on it, damaged ice cream boxes. The officials destroyed 180kg flour, 18kg packed food items, 10kg of bananas, 5kg rotten dates, 52 packets of packed boiled corn and dozen packets of dry fruits.RMC health officer Dr Pankaj Rathod told TOI, “We found that frozen and perishable foods items were kept under higher temperature than prescribed. They have also been warned that if they are again found indulging in such practices, their food license would be suspended.”The health team also advised the administration to sell packed items only and use pest control at regular intervals. They also found mites in flour and in food storage areas of the mall and supermarket located on 150-feet Ring Road.Further, the health officials found vegetables, fruits and other perishable items being stored in unhygienic condition, making it dangerous for human consumption.
