Four held for cheating bank of Rs 11 lakh

RAJKOT: Four persons were arrested on Tuesday for cheating a nationalized bank to the tune of Rs 10.91 lakh by taking advantage of the technical glitch in the bank’s online payment software.The accused — Prakash Harshora (22), Kalpesh Meniya (24), Amit Japariya (24) and Dinesh Gadhadara (28) — were arrested by the Rajkot rural police for cheating Bank of India’s Atkot branch of Rs 10.91 lakh. But the accused, despite notice from the bank to return the access amount withdrawn, did not repay the money. All four accused are account holders in the branch.According to the police complaint lodged by the bank officials, the accused took advantage of the technical glitch in the bank’s online payment system to commit the fraud . Due to software glitch, if a consumer withdraws cash or makes payment online, the amount did not get debited from the bank account.When the accused came to know about the glitch, they transferred money from their bank to e-wallet account and used it for shopping and making bill payments over the past one month.However, once the bank officials came to know about the problem they identified customers whose transactions were not reflected in their bank accounts and asked them to deposit the respective amount..
