RAJKOT: One more farmer from Saurashtra ended life by consuming pesticide in Mewasa village of Jamkalyanpur taluka in Devbhoomi Dwarka district. One suicide each was reported from Jamnagar and Bhavnagar districts. Barring Chawda, all the farmers have committed suicide due to crop failure.Of the 25 farmer suicides, six were reported from Amreli district , five from Devbhoomi Dwarka district, four from Surendranagar district, three each from Rajkot and Junagadh district and two from Porbandar. The deceased, identified as Lakhman Chawda (35), had consumed pesticide on Monday night and he died at a private hospital in Khambhalia on Wednesday. However, contrary to the widely held belief that Chawda had committed suicide due to crop failure, police said he had done so as he was depressed over his physical disability — his both legs were crippled.“According to the statement by his cousin brother Parbat, Chawda had been crippled since his childhood and had been suffering from depression, which finally drove him to take the drastic step,” said D B Gadhvi, head constable with Khambhalia police station.Further investigation into the case has been handed over to Jamkalyanpur police station. With Chawda’s death, the death toll of farmers in Saurashtra since September 2018 has mounted to 25..
