New panel to curtail tobacco lobby clout

Consumption of smokeless tobacco is very high in Jharkhand with 35.4% adults out of 38.9% consuming different forms of tobacco orally. It has been seen that tobacco product manufacturers try to intervene directly and indirectly in government policy in their own interests. "Global Adult Tobacco Survey Report 2017 (GATS 2), which was released early this year, states that Jharkhand has recorded a slide in tobacco consumption from 50.1% to 38.9% in two years since 2015. It, however, adds that the number of tobacco smokers have increased by 1.5% in the state.
